A recently disclosed vulnerability in the html-purifier JavaScript library has exposed a troubling security gap in the way many web and cloud applications sanitize user input. Discovered by researcher Kacper Szurek, the flaw allows attackers to bypass XSS protections — turning a supposed safeguard into a security threat.

But this isn’t just a developer concern — it’s a cloud security red flag.

Why This Matters in Cloud Environments

Open-source packages like html-purifier are foundational in modern cloud-native architectures. They’re deeply embedded in containerized apps, serverless functions, and CI/CD pipelines. As a result:

  • Security teams often don’t even know they’re in use
  • Vulnerabilities can propagate into production rapidly
  • Traditional scanners fail to catch them in real-time cloud environments

This creates dangerous blind spots in your cloud security posture — and that’s where incidents begin.

From Vulnerability to Incident in Seconds

In affected versions (prior to v0.4.1), crafted HTML can bypass purification, allowing attackers to execute Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks. This opens the door to:

  • Session hijacking
  • Credential theft
  • Phishing redirects
  • Data exposure

If your cloud workloads use vulnerable libraries — even indirectly — attackers can exploit them across multiple services and environments.

Visibility and Context: CloudWize in Action

Upgrading to html-purifier v0.4.1 is necessary — but not enough.

CloudWize gives you full visibility into every vulnerability across your environment — with built-in severity scoring, real-time EPSS %, and exploit data (see screenshot below).

In this example, CloudWize flags CVE-2025-7783 as Critical, displays CVSS, EPSS, and even GitHub exploit links — making it easier to act fast and prioritize smart.

CloudWize: Cloud Security Center of Excellence

As the first Cloud Security Center of Excellence, CloudWize empowers security teams to:

  • Detect vulnerable third-party libraries across multi-cloud workloads
  • Connect the dots across CSPM, CNAPP, DSPM, and AISPM findings
  • Prioritize risks based on real cloud context and business impact
  • Investigate incidents with full context and guided remediation
  • Streamline collaboration between developers, security, and operations
  • Do all of this affordably and at scale — ideal for SMBs and MSSPs

CloudWize also includes Web Application Pen Testing capabilities, giving you proactive insight into app-layer vulnerabilities.

Your Cloud Moves Fast. So Should Your Security.

The html-purifier flaw underscores a broader truth: in the cloud, speed without visibility is a liability.
CloudWize helps you spot hidden risks, fix issues fast, and align your entire cloud operation around secure growth.
